Tornos – CNC sliding-headstock lathes and multi-spindle lathes for high productivity

When it comes to precision CNC turning, Tornos is one of the benchmark brands.
The company has built a strong reputation on two key technologies: sliding-headstock lathes, engineered for ultra-high precision machining, and CNC multi-spindle lathes, ideal for producing large quantities of parts in extremely short cycle times.
ConGri is an official Tornos dealer and helps companies select the right model, supporting the entire process: from workflow analysis to production start-up.

Tornos technology

The difference between a traditional CNC lathe and a Tornos machine is not just a matter of axis count, but the ability to maintain process stability at high speed, even on very small parts and extremely tight tolerances. This is where Tornos excels.
The real distinction lies in the ability to keep the process stable while machining at high speed on small diameters and narrow tolerances.

In sliding-headstock lathes, the tool machines a bar that moves longitudinally, guided by the sliding headstock. This eliminates deflection and vibrations that often compromise quality when working with small diameters. The result? Perfect surfaces, fewer rejects and exceptional performance on complex or very long parts.

Every movement is managed through synchronized kinematics: front tools, rear tools, C axis and sub-spindle can work in parallel. The part moves, material is removed, and the sub-spindle performs secondary operations without stopping the cycle. This reduces the cycle time and maximizes every second of machining.

In multi-spindle lathes, the operating principle is different: instead of a single station, multiple spindles work on the same part in sequence, each performing a different operation. Tornos engineering synchronizes spindles and tool turrets with incredible precision, transforming a normally “serial” process into a “parallel” one. Each station becomes a mini turning center, configurable and automated for part handling at the end of the cycle.

Thermal control is another strategic advantage. Tornos uses compensation systems that consider spindle heat and moving components to avoid dimensional variations typical of unattended production.

The tool management system is designed to eliminate wasted time. The machine identifies every tool, monitors remaining tool life and signals when a change is required. The operator doesn’t need to chase parameters or perform complex setups: the machine manages everything, and production keeps running.

Every Tornos machine is designed for a clear purpose: turning into a continuous, reliable process, ready to scale with the company’s production needs.

Tornos product range – Sliding-headstock and CNC multi-spindle lathes

Tornos offers two main product lines, meeting the needs of those seeking extreme precision as well as those requiring uncompromising productivity. The range covers machining of very small diameters and includes multitasking models with sub-spindle, rotating tools and integrated automation systems.

Tornos CNC sliding-headstock lathes

Tornos sliding-headstock lathes are designed for manufacturers producing complex, small-diameter parts: medical, electronics, watchmaking, connectors and micro-mechanics are the sectors where they perform at their best.
The bar feeds through the headstock, ensuring extremely high concentricity and zero vibration. Working simultaneously on dual tool stations enables turning, milling and drilling in a single pass, dramatically reducing cycle times.
Bar loading is automated and the machines can also run unattended, ideal for non-stop production.

Tornos CNC multi-spindle lathes

For large volumes, Tornos multi-spindle lathes are the optimal choice. Each spindle is independent and performs a different machining phase on the same workpiece. With each rotation of the spindle block, the part advances until fully completed.
The modular configuration of spindles and tool turrets allows fast adaptation to new production requirements without losing efficiency when changing part formats. You can integrate part evacuation systems, in-line quality controls and fully automated tool management.
